Orochimaru and the Third Hokage continue their fierce battle to the death. Orochimaru changes the battle when he uses the summoning jutsu to summon and reanimate the first and second Hokage. The third Hokage must now fight for his life against three formidable opponents. Meanwhile Naruto, Sakura, and Shikamaru, led by Pakkun continue to chase Sasuke. As Naruto and the others chase Sasuke, they themselves are being hunted by ninjas from the Sand Village. As Sasuke confronts Kankuro, Temari, and Gaara, Shino steps in to fight Kankuro and allows Sasuke to continue his pursuit of Gaara and Temari. Once Sasuke catches up to Gaara and Temari he is unprepared for what he sees.

At this point, all I can say is wow. With all the fights going the action is at an insane level right now. We finally get to see an all-out fight not just between the Hokage and Orochimaru, but also between Shino and Kankuro. I will say that for someone who seems past their prime, the third Hokage still knows how to pack a punch. The third Hokage stood his ground against Orochimaru and the first and second Hokage. The fight between Kankuro and Shino was nothing to scoff at either. Both Kankuro and Shino have amazing and unique jutsu. The jutsu that they used made for an amazing fight and kept me guessing the entire time.

As far as story goes we did get a look at the history between the third Hokage and Orochimaru. We got to see firsthand what it was that caused the falling out between the student and the teacher. Now that we have the whole picture it is easy to see how the third Hokage can’t forgive Orochimaru. Aside from the fighting a lot of the volume was made up of Naruto, Sakura, and Shikamaru chasing Sasuke. It isn’t until the very end that Sasuke catches Gaara and their fight begins. I am certain that in the next volume we get to see Sasuke and Gaara reach the long-awaited conclusion to their fight.

Shikamaru did have a bit of a character development when he volunteered to stay behind and act as a decoy to allow Naruto and Sakura to escape their pursuers. As we know Shikamaru is the kind of guy who can’t be bothered and would rather follow the path of least resistance. That was not the case here. Shikamaru willing put himself in danger to ensure his comrades escape. Shikamaru gained some serious points with me for this selfless act.

This volume was rounded out perfectly. I can’t wait to see the conclusion to the fight between the third Hokage and Orochimaru. Nor can I wait to see Sasuke and Gaara go head to head in an all-out fight. Even with the minor story developments this volume was satisfying across the board. My hopes are as high as ever for this series. Naruto volume 14 was a phenomenal read.
